My Unbiased Review For Wealthy Affiliate

What Is Rev

Rev is a platform connecting freelancer with people who are in need of transcription/translation/caption services.

Founded in 2010, Rev was formerly known as FoxTranscribe or FoxTranslate Rev.com. Rev started up offering remote speech to text jobs. Over the years, Rev has put in much effort into machine learning and has built an industry-leading speech recognition engine to transcribe speech-to-text in minutes.

Having freelancers positioned all over the world, coupled with advanced software and proprietary artificial intelligence position Rev to offer exceptional accuracy and the fastest turnaround at the lowest prices.

To make money with Rev, you can either sign up as a transcriptionist, captioner, or translator.

As a transcriptionist, you will listen to either audio or video file, and accurately type out what is being said. You may also need to do verbatim transcription i.e. to include the silent breaks, the laughs, the cough etc. Examples of such jobs are the transcription of recorded interviews, focus groups, lectures, podcasts etc. You get paid $0.24-$0.90 per audio/video minute.

We human beings are visual creatures, we are attracted to video because it is easy to digest, entertaining and engaging. Video is also very accessible to anyone with internet access, both to watch and to produce. And those caption displayed at the bottom of the screen is written by no one other than the captioner.

Captioning jobs
could range from writing captions for YouTube videos to working on closed captions for a movie or a big brand’s marketing videos. As a captioner, you’ll get paid every Monday for all audio files captioned and completed the prior week. The payment rate is set between $0.45-$0.75 per audio/video minute, and the average earning per month are $240.

As online video rise in popularity, so has the need for subtitling. As a subtitle translator, you’ll be converting spoken English into the requested language. Minimum pay rate ranging from $1.3 – $3 per /video minute, depending on the language you are dealing with.

Signing up with Rev is easy, simply provide your name, email address, and position (either a captioner or a transcriber) and you are in!

Once you have created an account with Rev, you will be directed to various tests designed to assess your grammatical skill, typing skill, and transcription skill. The whole process shouldn’t take more than an hour time.

You will be tested on your grammar, capitalization, and punctuation skills.

Typing Test
You are given a block of text, you need to type out as many texts as you can in 60 seconds.

Transcription Test
You will be given an audio file with multiple speakers. Not only you need to transcribe what you hear but also distinguish between the different speakers.

Selection Process

After completing the test, it takes under 48 hours to receive your result.

If you are selected, you will be directed to Rev’s Workplace platform where you can sign the user agreement form. But if you are not, you may retry the tests after 45 days.

What I Like About Rev

Flexible Work Schedule

You have the flexibility to decide which jobs to take on and when to get it. You also get to listen to the file before picking up the job. Even after picking it up, you have 1 hour to decline a job if you are not comfortable with it.

What I Don’t Like About Rev

1. Low Earning Potential

Transcription basically means typing what you hear, right? How hard can that be?

The truth is, transcription job is not as easy as we thought.

At first glance, the per hour pay rate from Rev looks decent. However, we haven’t take into account the time spent looking for a good project, rewinding of audio/video due to poor audio quality, or the need to fact-check the array of technical words that might pop up in medical or legal files.

Transcription is not just about typing, you need to be able to proofread too. Without the understanding of specific terminology and some companies’ names, you will not be able to transcribe well. A 15-minute file will likely take someone an hour to transcribe.

As you can see, after averaging out the payments over the time spent, the pay rate is actually very low. The amount you receive will neither make you rich nor allowing you to quit your day job. It is just an extra gig at its best.

2. Lack Of Communication And Support

In many ways, there seems to be a lack of communication between the Rev team and the freelancers.

In Nov 2019, Rev made headlines after it slashed minimum pay for its transcribers from 45 cents per audio / video minute transcribed to 30 cents. This came without warning and existing members were not informed about the changes.

There have also been cases whereby Rev closing freelancers’ account even for those who have maintained great metrics. Freelancers are left puzzled without much explanation given. Once a decision is made, there is no way of challenging the decision because they cut off all contact when they close your account.

3. Lack Of Jobs

Don’t expect a steady stream of assignments. There is dry period and you need to be ready to face them.

Working as a freelancer means there is no guarantee there will be work. You cannot rely on being able to work whenever you want to and however much you want to.

Let’s not forget that Revver+ freelancers get early access to tasks, meaning that they can grab all those ‘easier’ assignments and the leftovers are those unwanted, shoddy recording.

Like most freelancer platforms, there are always those jobs that have been there forever without anyone touching it, and those that get snatched up real quick.

4. No Prospects

If you just want to earn a few bucks in your spare time, then this might be something worth looking into.

Otherwise, transcription jobs like this is a shortsighted way of making money with no prospect of advancement.

There will be no pay raise, no promotion, no bonuses of any kind. And to be honest, considering the small pay that comes with it, it barely worth your time.

Final Verdict

Let’s be realistic, working as a transcriptionist with Rev is not a real huge moneymaker.

The amount you can earn will all depend upon the time you spend on it. Once you stop working, your income stop flowing in too. If you want to make a full-time passive income from home, then Rev is not for you.

Spending time doing tasks like this, without building up anything for yourself – it is not worth it!

For that reason, I recommend you to see how I went from my 9-5 job to making a living online.
