PartyLite is a direct selling company specialising in candles.
It all started in 1909 when a woman named Mabel Bakerin began making bayberry candles in her Cape Cod kitchen for her family and friends. Her candles were amazingly well-received, and she eventually turned her candle-making into a money-making venture.
Before Mabel passed away in 1965, she had grown her company’s valuation to $6 million.
Today, PartyLite claims to be #1 party plan company selling candles, candleholders, flameless fragrance and wax warmers, as well as holiday and home décor in 19 different countries.
PartyLite Product Line
Candles are the flagship products of PartyLite.
PartyLite claims that their candles are made of exclusive formulas to ensure the highest of quality. Each proprietary wax formula is free from harmful impurities like paraben, phthalates, sulfates and safe for consumers and the environment. The candle wicks are also 100% natural and lead-free.
Their products are sold through online platform as well as through their consultants worldwide. To date, the company has more than 70.000 consultants that are located all around the globe.
Just to be clear, PartyLite consultants are basically people who join PartyLite team and make money by selling PartyLite products or recruiting others into the team.
The consultants usually promote the products by ‘hosting a party’. The ‘host’ doesn’t have to be the consultant himself/herself. In fact, it is better to have different hosts so that the consultant can pitch to various group of people. The party can be done anywhere they want – at the comfort of own home, in the restaurants, during a sporting event, in a rented space etc. During the party, the consultant will showcase PartyLite products, with the intention to sell and recruit others to join their downline.
PartyLite Compensation Plan
PartyLite has a simple compensation plan structure – you can either work independently or work by growing your team. As in any MLM business, having downline can increase your earning potential as you also share the profit from your team sales. It is only through the downline you can create a passive income which allows you to ‘make money while you sleep’.
Consultant
As a consultant, you earn 25% on all compensatable sales. And for each month that you reach $2,000 or more in sales, you’ll get an extra 7% Bonus.
For example, a montly sales of $1,400 will give you $1,400 x 25% = $350 income. while a monthly sales of $2,000 will give you $2,000 x (25%+7%) = $640 income.
Team Builder
Once you have gathered 2 downlines, you get an extra one-time $200 Product Award on top of your personal sales commission.
Unit Leader
With 4 downlines, you can potentially make up to 38% commission. Let me break down the percentage for you here:
• 25% basic Profit
• 6% Bonus when you manage to reach a certain monthly sales level set by PartyLite.
• 7% Profit Plus on total compensatable sales of the Consultants in your Unit
How to Make Money with PartyLite
Now comes the most important part – how to make money with PartyLite.
There are 2 different ways for you to get started as a PartyLite consultant.
The first one requires you to make a purchase of the $49 Anniversary Kit.
The second one allows you to join PartyLite at no cost. To do that, you will have to host a Starter Party, which makes you both the consultant and the host, and by doing so you will earn yourself the free Starter Kit. In a way, this is how you introduce your new business to other people – you are to Invite people from your personal contact list, and ask each of them to bring along another friend (preferably someone you don’t know). By doing so, you can meet new people and gain new customers, hosts and potential new consultants.
And just in case you are wondering, the starter kit is basically a collection of samples from PartyLite product lines, catalogues and business building tools.
Going forward, you can also get other people to host the party for you. The idea behind it is to reach out to more social circle as each of your hosts will have his/her own group of friends. Despite not being able to earn any income, being a host has its own perks. On average, hosts receive $100 in free products, and they get discounted price on monthly specials. Plus, they can become a Preferred Host and earn exclusive rewards.

What I Like About PartyLite
PartyLite is a well-established company, it is founded in 1973 – one of the oldest candle making companies around! And it has been growing strong since then. Undeniably, they must be doing something right, most of their products are of good quality too. If you have ever attended any host party, do give it a try yourself. There are usually samples being given away.
What I Don’t Like About PartyLite
1. Overpriced Candles?
A candle from PartyLite can easily set you back almost $30. If you really think about it, how many people can afford or willing to spend so much money on a good candle? Most of us would probably walk to a retail store and grab one instead, at a much cheaper price. Even for someone who love candles, how often do they buy it?
Good-to-have items like this are the first to go during any family budget cut. Imagine the impact it has on your business as a consultant.
2. Not BBB Accredited
It came to me as a surprise that such a long-standing company like PartyLite is not BBB (Better Business Bureau) accredited.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that a company that is not BBB accredited is a scam. But having a good rating will definitely help to increase a company’s reputation.
3. High Start-Up Cost
While hosting a party allows you to show off various products that PartyLite offers, there is also a catch. The catch is that you will have to first purchase those products in order to bring them to the party.
Those little candles and decor can adds up quickly and you may end up spending more than what you have expected.
4. Not As Easy As It Sounds
MLM basically stands for multi-level-marketing, and the success in any MLM business relies heavily on recruitment. As the size of your downline increases, your rank moves up and you get to enjoy more bonuses and commission. To be successful in MLM, you will probably spend more time growing your downlines rather than selling the product
That being said, many companies also set a minimum sales requirement which you need to meet in order to maintain your ranking in the company. It is easy to see how things can get complicated quickly – juggling between sales, party, and management of your team. It is by no mean an easy task. Far too often, I have seen many people get involved in MLM thinking that they can just get a few recruits and then sit back collecting money – now we know that it is far from the truth!

Is PartyLite a Pyramid Scheme?
There is a fine line between network marketing and Pyramid Scheme.
While both network marketing and Pyramid Scheme are having a pyramid structure, Pyramid Scheme in general refers to businesses of which their main source of income coming from the recruiting system. They have either no retailable products, or their products couldn’t really quite justify the price they are charging.
Obviously, PartyLite has retailable products (candles!), and recruitment is not the only way to make money. Therefore, the good news is that PartyLite is NOT a pyramid scheme.
Final Thoughts
Can you make money with PartyLite? Yes definitely!
But is PartyLite something I would recommend you to work with? Unfortunately no.
The best reason for joining an MLM company is when you really love a product, and you want to get your cost covered while making extra money.
If making money is your only reason for joining, forget about it. Losing friends, wasting time and energy is not going to make it worth the money you make. And the worst part, you are still technically ’employed’, you build up nothing for yourself at all. If one day the company get busted, the downline that you have spent so much building will be gone in an instant too.
